Ariel Kennan of the NYC Mayor’s Office Speaks to Fast Company About Public Service Design
Ariel Kennan is the Director of Design and Product at the Center for Economic Opportunity in New York City Mayor’s Office of Operations. She spoke to Doreen Lorenzo for Co.Design as part of Designing Women, a series of interviews with brilliant women in the design industry.
Because governments organize themselves into specific issue areas, individual residents can have a difficult time interacting with several different agencies in order to receive government services. Kennan’s job is to bring better services across those touchpoints by using design as a service. Her team is comprised of public servants who are also full-time designers.
Kennan spoke to Lorenzo about the rise of urban innovation programs and the sharing of program data and research with others working in the government sector. She said, “We also share innovative approaches, and then try to apply them in our own cities. It’s amazing that there are other people that have similar jobs to me because my job often feels like no one else’s. Having other folks nationally and internationally whom I can share with has been really empowering.”
